We wanted the polished look of a clean leather shoe and the supportive comfort of a casual slide, and we finally found a factory that was up to the task. Located in Florence, this factory of just 18 employees is known worldwide for their uncanny craftsmanship—they create shoes for some of the most forward brands in fashion today.
How We Found It
Because the factory is so small, it’s choosy about the brands it works with. Luckily, one of our longtime shoe partners introduced us to the owner, Mauro—and he just so happened to be an Everlane fan.
Ethical Manufacturing
Martini opened in 1968 with a goal of making the highest quality, 100% Italian women’s shoes on the market. Nearly half a century later, they’ve stayed true to their promise, and they operate out of the same building under the same ethos. This factory takes vertical manufacturing to a whole new level—their showroom, offices, storage, and cutting machines are downstairs, while the factory is upstairs. Plus, the factory regularly donates to a number of charities, including ones for workers’ children, Down’s Syndrome, and a local theater (where one of the stitchers is a local actress). Did we mention they scored a perfect 100 on their compliance audit?
The Material
Our sandals are made of 100% Italian leather that’s super soft and just gets better with age. Plus, they have a molded footbed that’s made to support the unique shape of your foot. And the quality? You can’t dispute it—Mauro’s wife stresses over production the way an Italian mother would worry about her son not eating enough.
About the Owner
The son of a shoemaker, Mauro has been in the business his whole life. He and his wife, Franca, work at the factory every day with their son, Simone, and his wife. You might also find Ophelia, Simone’s pet Pomeranian, roaming the factory floor.
